Tools you will need to measure vertical blinds:

  • A steel measuring tape
  • A pencil for marking and writing down your measurements
  • A worksheet for keeping records
  • A ladder (if required for taller windows)

Tips for accurate measuring:

  • Always note width and height correctly and avoid mixing them up, as this could cause your blinds not to fit.
  • If you are measuring several windows, check each one individually. Even small differences in size can affect how well the blinds fit.
  • Always use a metal measuring tape, as cloth tapes can stretch or bend and give the wrong result.

Measuring for Outside Recess

Measure the total area you want the blind to cover. To reduce light leakage, allow the blind to extend at least 70mm above the window recess and 50mm on each side. The length of the overlap at the bottom is your choice, but remember to check for obstacles such as radiators.

Measuring for Inside Recess

This measurement is required if you want the blind to sit neatly inside the window recess. Measure the full width and height of the recess (the opening space). Take measurements in three places for both width and height, and always use the smallest figure. Do not make any adjustments yourself, as we will do this to ensure the blind fits correctly. Again, always use a metal tape for accuracy.

When fitting your vertical blind, make sure you have the parts included with it.

Extra items you will need:

  • 2 top fix brackets
  • 2 face fix brackets
  • 1 set of hangers
  • 1 allen key
  • 2 stabilising chains
  • 1 safety hook
  • 4 wood screws
  • 1 weight
  • A pencil
  • Screws
  • Drill with suitable bits
  • Crosshead screwdriver
  • Metal tape measure

Face Fixing

Place the brackets around 5cm from each end of where the headrail will be fitted. If more than two brackets are supplied, spread the extra brackets evenly across the length of the rail. Make sure the fixings are suitable for the type of wall or surface. To fit, hook the back of the headrail into the bracket, rotate it into place, and secure it by tightening the front screw.

Top Fixing

Measure and mark where the brackets should go, leaving enough clearance for window handles or other obstructions inside the recess. Position the brackets about 10cm from each end of where the headrail will sit. If extra brackets are supplied, fix them evenly along the length. Again, check that fixings are right for the surface you are attaching to. Tilt and hook the headrail into the bracket and rotate until it clicks into place. To remove the headrail, push the bracket release.
