Tools Required for Measuring Vertical Blinds

  • A strong steel tape measure
  • A pencil for marking and writing down your sizes
  • A worksheet or notepad to record your details
  • A ladder if the window is high or difficult to reach

Helpful Tips for Accurate Measuring

  • Do not confuse width and height measurements when writing them down, as this could lead to blinds that do not fit correctly.
  • If you are measuring more than one window, measure each one individually. Even small differences can affect how the blind fits.

Measuring for Outside Recess

When fitting outside the recess, measure the full size of the area that you would like the blind to cover. To reduce light coming through, allow the blind to overlap the recess by at least 70mm at the top and 50mm on each side. The overlap at the bottom is your choice, but you should also consider items such as radiators. Always use a metal tape measure because cloth tapes can bend or stretch, leading to inaccurate results.

Measuring for Inside Recess

If you want the blind to sit within the recess, measure the exact width and height of the inside opening. These are the full recess sizes, and deductions will be made to ensure the blind fits correctly. Take three separate measurements for both the width and the drop, and use the smallest of each. Do not make any deductions yourself, as this will be handled to guarantee a neat fit. Again, a metal tape measure is advised for accuracy.

Make sure you have all the parts supplied with your vertical blind before beginning.

Extra Equipment You Will Need:

  • 2 top fix brackets
  • 2 face fix brackets
  • 1 set of hangers
  • 1 Allen key
  • 2 stabilising chains
  • 1 safety hook
  • 4 wood screws
  • 1 weight
  • A pencil
  • Additional screws if required
  • A drill with the right drill bits
  • A crosshead screwdriver
  • A metal tape measure

Face Fix Installation

  • Position the brackets about 5cm in from each end where the headrail will sit. If more than two brackets are provided, space the extras evenly across the length of the blind.
  • Check that the fixings you use are appropriate for the wall or surface.
  • Hook the back of the headrail into the bracket, rotate it into place, and secure it by tightening the small screw at the front of the bracket.

Top Fix Installation

  • Mark and measure the fitting points carefully, leaving space for any obstructions such as window handles that may stick into the recess.
  • Place the brackets about 10cm from each end of the headrail so that the blind clears the window handle. If additional brackets are included, fix them at equal intervals along the blind.
  • Ensure the fixings are correct for the surface you are mounting to.
  • Tilt the headrail, hook it into the bracket at the marked point, then rotate it until it clicks securely into place. To release, press the bracket at the release point.
