Tools You Will Need for Measuring Vertical Blinds

  • A steel tape measure
  • A pencil for marking and noting sizes
  • A sheet of paper for recording measurements
  • A ladder, if the window is tall

Tips for Getting Correct Measurements

  • Do not confuse width and height when writing them down, as this can result in blinds that do not fit properly.
  • If you are measuring more than one window, do not assume they are the same size. Check each one individually and write down the details, as small differences can affect the final result.

Measuring Outside the Recess

Measure the area that you want the blind to cover. To reduce light coming through the gaps, it is suggested that the blind extends at least 70mm above the window recess and 50mm to each side.

The overlap at the bottom depends on your preference, but be mindful of items such as radiators. Always use a metal tape measure, as cloth versions can stretch or bend, leading to incorrect readings.

Measuring Inside the Recess

If you want the blind to sit inside the recess, measure the full width and height of the opening. Adjustments will then be made so the blind fits neatly within the space.

Take measurements in three different spots for both the width and the drop, and use the smallest figure in each case. Do not make any reductions yourself; this will be done for you to ensure the blind fits correctly. Again, always use a metal tape measure, as cloth ones can give inaccurate results.

Check that you have all the items needed with your vertical blind:

Additional tools and items required for installation:

  • 2 top-fix brackets
  • 2 face-fix brackets
  • 1 set of hangers
  • 1 Allen key
  • 2 stabilising chains
  • 1 safety hook
  • 4 wood screws
  • 1 weight
  • A pencil
  • Extra screws
  • A drill with the right drill bits
  • A cross-head screwdriver
  • A metal tape measure

Face Fix

Fit the brackets around 5cm from each end of where the headrail will be placed. If there are more than two brackets included, position the extras evenly across the full length of the blind. Always check that the fixings you use are suitable for the type of wall or surface.

Attach the back of the headrail into the bracket, rotate it into place, and then tighten the small screw at the front to hold it securely.

Top Fix

Mark the fixing points carefully, leaving space for any window handles or other fittings that extend into the recess. Place the brackets around 10cm from each end of the headrail so they clear the handles. If additional brackets are provided, fix them evenly across the blind. Again, make sure the fittings you use are appropriate for the wall or surface.

Tilt the headrail into the bracket, rotate it until it clicks firmly into place, and to remove it later, press the release point on the bracket.
