Tools You Will Need to Measure Vertical Blinds

  • A strong metal measuring tape
  • A pencil to note down your sizes
  • A sheet or worksheet to write down your results
  • A step ladder if your windows are tall

Tips to Help You Take Accurate Measurements

Make sure not to confuse the width with the height when you are recording measurements, as mixing them up can lead to blinds that do not fit properly. If you are measuring more than one window, do not assume they are all the same size. Instead, measure each one carefully and write down the exact size, as even small differences can affect how the blinds fit.

Measuring for Outside Recess

Measure the full size of the area you want the blind to cover. To reduce light gaps, it is recommended that the blind overlaps the recess by at least 70mm at the top and 50mm on both sides. The overlap at the bottom is up to your choice, but remember to allow for obstacles such as radiators or window sills. Always use a steel measuring tape, as cloth tapes can stretch and give inaccurate results.

Measuring for Inside Recess

If you want your blind to sit inside the window recess, measure the total width and height of the recess opening. We will then make the needed adjustments to ensure the blind fits correctly.

Take three measurements each for the width and the drop, and always use the smallest measurement. Do not make any reductions yourself, as we will do that to ensure a perfect fit. Again, always use a metal tape to avoid errors.

When you are ready to install your vertical blind, make sure you have the following items included:

Extra Equipment You Will Need During Installation

  • 2 top fix brackets
  • 2 face fix brackets
  • 1 set of hangers
  • 1 Allen key
  • 2 stabilising chains
  • 1 safety hook
  • 4 wood screws
  • 1 weight
  • A pencil
  • Screws
  • A drill with suitable bits
  • A crosshead screwdriver
  • A strong metal tape measure

Face Fix

For face fixing, position the brackets about 5cm from each end of the headrail location. If you have more than two brackets, space the extra ones evenly along the blind’s length. Make sure the fixings you use are suitable for the type of wall or surface.

To attach, hook the back of the headrail into the bracket and rotate it into place. Then, tighten the short screw at the front of the bracket to secure the headrail firmly.

Top Fix

For top fixing, first measure and mark the points, making sure to allow space for handles or other obstructions that stick out into the recess. Place the brackets around 10cm from each end of where the headrail will sit, as this will clear the window handles. If you have more than two brackets, position the extras evenly across the width. Check that your fixings are suitable for the surface.

Tilt the headrail into the bracket and rotate it until you hear a click, which confirms it is locked in place. To remove the headrail, press the release point on the bracket.
