Tools Required for Measuring Vertical Blinds:

  • A reliable steel measuring tape
  • A pencil to note down your measurements
  • A worksheet to record all sizes
  • A ladder, if the window is higher up

Guidance for Accurate Measuring

  • Always write down width and height separately and correctly. Mixing them up can result in a blind that does not fit.
  • If you are measuring more than one window, never assume they are the same size. Measure each one carefully and write them down. Even small differences can affect how well the blind will sit.

Measuring for Outside Recess

For blinds fitted outside the recess, measure the exact area you want the blind to cover. To help block out light, it is best for the blind to extend at least 70mm above the window and 50mm on each side.

The overlap at the bottom is a personal choice, but you should allow for any items such as radiators that may be in the way. Always use a steel tape measure, as fabric ones can stretch or bend, which may give incorrect sizes.

Measuring for Inside Recess

If you want the blind to sit inside the window recess, measure the full width and height of the opening. This will allow for precise adjustments to be made so the blind fits properly.

Measure in three places for both the width and the drop, and take the smallest measurement each time. Do not make adjustments yourself, as these will be taken care of to ensure a correct fit. Always use a steel tape measure, as fabric versions may stretch and cause errors.

Before starting, check that all the required fittings for your vertical blind are included.

Extra Tools and Parts You Will Need:

  • 2 top fix brackets
  • 2 face fix brackets
  • 1 set of hangers
  • 1 Allan key
  • 2 stabilising chains
  • 1 safety hook
  • 4 wood screws
  • 1 weight
  • A pencil
  • Screws
  • A drill with the right drill bits
  • A cross-head screwdriver
  • A strong metal tape measure

Face Fix Fitting

Place the brackets around 5cm from each end of where the headrail will sit. If you have more than two brackets, space the others evenly across the blind. Always ensure the fittings you use are right for the type of wall or surface.

To fix, hook the back of the headrail into the bracket, rotate it into place, and then tighten the small screw at the front to secure it.

Top Fix Fitting

Measure carefully and mark the positions, allowing for any obstacles like window handles that extend into the recess. The brackets should be fixed about 10cm from each end of the headrail position, which ensures space for the window handle to open. If more than two brackets are included, space the extras evenly along the length of the blind. Check again that your fixings are suitable for the wall or surface.

To fit, tilt the headrail and hook it into the bracket. Rotate the headrail until you hear it click into place. To remove it, simply press the bracket to release the headrail.
