Tools you will need:

  • Steel measuring tape
  • Pencil for marking measurements
  • Worksheet to record measurements
  • Ladder if measuring tall windows

Tips for accurate measurements:

  • Keep height and width measurements separate. Swapping them could result in a blind that does not fit.
  • Measure each window individually. Even small differences can affect the final fit.

Outside Recess

Measure the area you want the blind to cover. To reduce light gaps, allow the blind to overlap the recess by at least 70mm at the top and 50mm on each side. The bottom overlap can be chosen according to personal preference, but consider obstacles like radiators. Always use a metal tape measure as cloth tapes may stretch or bend and give incorrect measurements.

Inside Recess

For a blind that fits inside the window recess, measure the full width and height of the opening. Take measurements in three places for both width and drop, and use the smallest figures. Do not make any deductions yourself; the correct deductions will be applied to ensure a perfect fit. Use a metal tape measure for accuracy.

Ensure you have all components supplied with the blind:

  • Top fix brackets x2
  • Face fix brackets x2
  • Hangers x1
  • Allen key x1
  • Stabilising chain x2
  • Safety hook x1
  • Wood screws x4
  • Weight x1
  • Pencil
  • Extra screws
  • Drill with suitable bits
  • Crosshead screwdriver
  • Metal tape measure

Face Fix

Place the brackets about 5cm from each end of the headrail. If more than two brackets are provided, space the remaining evenly along the blind’s length. Make sure fixings suit the wall or surface. Hook the back of the headrail into the bracket, rotate into position, and tighten the small screw at the front to secure it.

Top Fix

Measure carefully and mark space for window handles or other obstacles. Position the brackets about 10cm from each end of the headrail. If more than two brackets are provided, space the extra ones evenly along the blind’s length. Ensure the fixings are suitable for the wall or surface. Tilt the headrail into the bracket, rotate until it clicks, and to remove, press the bracket to release it.
