Tools You Need for Measuring Vertical Blinds

  • Steel measuring tape
  • Pencil for marking measurements
  • Worksheet for recording results
  • Ladder, if required for higher windows

Tips for Accurate Measurement

  • Always keep width and height separate when recording sizes, as mixing them can cause blinds not to fit properly.
  • If measuring more than one window, measure each one individually. Do not assume they are the same size, as small variations can make a big difference in how the blinds fit.

Outside Recess

For blinds fitted outside the recess, measure the full area you want the blind to cover. To limit light leakage, allow the blind to extend at least 70mm above the window recess and 50mm to each side.

The bottom overlap depends on your preference, but remember to check for obstacles such as radiators. Always use a metal tape measure, as cloth ones may bend or stretch, giving you inaccurate results.

Inside Recess

If you want the blind to sit inside the window recess, measure the full width and height of the opening. The required deductions will be made for you to guarantee a proper fit.

  • Measure in three different positions for both the width and the drop, then use the smallest figure.
  • Do not make deductions yourself, as these will be made to ensure the blind fits exactly.
  • Use a metal tape measure for accurate results, since cloth ones may not be reliable.

Before starting installation, check that you have all the parts included with your vertical blind.

Extra Tools and Equipment You Will Need

  • 2 top fix brackets
  • 2 face fix brackets
  • 1 hanger
  • 1 allen key
  • 2 stabilising chains
  • 1 safety hook
  • 4 wood screws
  • 1 weight
  • Pencil
  • Screws
  • Drill with correct bits
  • Crosshead screwdriver
  • Metal tape measure

Face Fix

Place the brackets about 5cm from each end of the headrail position. If extra brackets are supplied, space them evenly across the blind. Ensure that the fixings you use are suitable for the surface you are attaching them to.

To attach, hook the back of the headrail into the bracket, rotate it into place, and secure it by tightening the small screw at the front of the bracket.

Top Fix

Mark the bracket positions carefully, leaving enough clearance for any handles or obstacles within the recess. Place brackets about 10cm from the ends of the headrail to avoid interference with window handles. If additional brackets are supplied, fit them evenly across the length of the blind. Always make sure your fixings are appropriate for the surface.

Tilt the headrail into the bracket, then rotate it until it clicks securely into position. To remove the headrail, press the bracket release point.
