Tools Needed to Measure Vertical Blinds

  • Steel tape measure
  • Pencil for marking and writing sizes
  • Paper or worksheet to record results
  • Ladder if the windows are high

Tips for Accurate Measurement

  • Write height and width correctly and do not swap them, as this could mean blinds that do not fit.
  • Do not assume all windows are the same size. Measure each one separately, as even small changes can affect the fit.
  • Always use a metal tape measure, since cloth ones can bend or stretch and give wrong readings.

Measuring for Outside Recess

Measure the size of the area you want the blind to cover. To reduce light gaps, the blind should overlap the recess by at least 70mm at the top and 50mm on each side.

The overlap at the bottom is up to you, but remember to check for things such as radiators.

Always use a strong metal tape for the most accurate results.

Measuring for Inside Recess

If you want the blind to sit inside the window opening, measure the full width and height of the recess. The makers will then make the small changes needed to ensure a perfect fit.

  • Measure in three places for both width and drop, then use the smallest size.
  • Do not make changes yourself; these will be done for you.
  • Always use a metal tape for accuracy.

Face Fix

Place the brackets around 5cm from the ends where the headrail will sit. If more than two brackets are supplied, place the extras evenly across the blind. Always check that the fixings are right for the type of wall or surface.

To attach, hook the back of the headrail into the bracket, rotate it into place, and then tighten the front screw to secure it.

Top Fix

When fixing inside a recess, measure and mark carefully, leaving space for items such as window handles. Position the brackets around 10cm from the ends of the headrail to allow clearance. If you have extra brackets, spread them evenly. Again, make sure the fixings suit the surface.

To attach, tilt and hook the headrail into the bracket, rotate until it clicks into place, and to release, push the bracket at the marked point.
