Tools You Will Need to Measure Vertical Blinds:

  • A steel tape measure
  • A pencil to mark your notes
  • A sheet to record the sizes
  • A ladder if measuring tall windows

Helpful Tips for Accurate Measurements:

  • Do not confuse the width and height when writing them down, as mixing them will lead to blinds that do not fit.
  • If you are measuring more than one window, never assume they are the same size. Measure each window separately, as small differences can affect how well the blinds fit.

Measuring for Outside Recess

  • Measure the full area you want the blind to cover. To reduce light coming through, it is best to let the blind overlap the window by at least 70mm at the top and 50mm on each side.
  • The bottom overlap is your choice, but keep in mind things like radiators or other obstacles.
  • Always use a metal tape measure. Cloth types can stretch or bend, which may give the wrong measurement.

Measuring for Inside Recess

  • Take this measurement if you want the blind to sit inside the window frame. Measure the full width and height of the recess, which is the opening itself, and the blind will be made with the right adjustments for a proper fit.
  • Measure in three places for both the width and the drop. Write down the smallest sizes.
  • Do not make any reductions yourself. This will be done for you to make sure the blind sits neatly.
  • Always use a metal tape, as fabric ones can stretch and give false sizes.

Before you begin, make sure you have the fittings that come with the blind.

Extra Tools and Equipment You Will Need:

  • 2 top-fix brackets
  • 2 face-fix brackets
  • 1 set of hangers
  • 1 Allen key
  • 2 stabilising chains
  • 1 safety hook
  • 4 wood screws
  • 1 weight
  • A pencil
  • Extra screws
  • A drill with the correct drill bits
  • A cross-head screwdriver
  • A metal tape measure

Face Fix

  • Position the brackets about 5cm in from each end where the headrail will go. If more than two brackets are supplied, fix the others evenly across the blind’s length. Make sure the fixings are right for the wall or surface you are attaching them to.
  • To fit, hook the back of the headrail into the bracket, then rotate it into place. Lock the headrail by tightening the small screw at the front of the bracket.

Top Fix

  • Mark the distance needed to clear obstacles like window handles that stick out into the recess. Place the brackets around 10cm from each end of the headrail position. This makes sure the blind clears the handle when fitted.
  • If more than two brackets are supplied, space the others evenly along the blind’s length. Again, check that the fixings are suitable for the surface.
  • To attach, tilt the headrail and hook it into the bracket. Rotate until it clicks into place. To release, press the bracket where it connects.
