Tools You Will Need to Measure Vertical Blinds

  • A steel measuring tape
  • A pencil for marking and writing measurements
  • A worksheet to note your results
  • A ladder, if measuring tall windows

Tips for Taking Accurate Measurements

  • Be careful not to mix up width and height when writing measurements. Switching them could lead to blinds that do not fit properly.
  • When measuring several windows, never assume they are the same size. Take measurements for each one separately, as even small differences can affect how the blind fits.

Measuring Outside the Recess

  • Record the exact size of the space you want the blind to cover. To help reduce light leakage, it is recommended that the blind extends at least 70mm above the recess and 50mm on each side.
  • The amount of overlap at the bottom is your choice, but keep in mind any obstructions such as radiators.
  • Always use a metal tape measure, as cloth tapes may bend or stretch and lead to inaccurate results.

Measuring Inside the Recess

  • Take these measurements if you want the blind to fit neatly within the window recess. Measure the full width and height of the recess (the size of the opening), and adjustments will be made for you to make sure it fits properly.
  • Take three measurements for both width and drop, then use the smallest figure.
  • Do not make deductions yourself, as this will be done to ensure the blind fits correctly.
  • Use a metal tape measure, as fabric ones can stretch and affect accuracy.

Before you start fitting your vertical blind, check that you have all the necessary parts.

Extra Equipment You Will Need:

  • 2 top fix brackets
  • 2 face fix brackets
  • 1 hanger
  • 1 Allen key
  • 2 stabilising chains
  • 1 safety hook
  • 4 wood screws
  • 1 weight
  • A pencil
  • Screws
  • A drill with the right drill bits
  • A crosshead screwdriver
  • A metal tape measure

Face Fix

  • Position the brackets around 5cm from the ends of where the headrail will be placed. If you are supplied with more than two brackets, fix the extras evenly across the length of the blind. Make sure the fixings are suitable for the type of wall or surface.
  • To attach, hook the back of the headrail into the bracket, rotate it into position, and tighten the small screw at the front of the bracket to secure it.

Top Fix

  • Carefully measure and mark the area, making sure to leave enough space for any window handles or parts that may get in the way. Place the brackets about 10cm from each end of the headrail, which helps clear the window handle. If you have more than two brackets, fit the extras evenly across the blind. Always confirm the fixings are correct for the wall or surface.
  • Tilt the headrail into the bracket, rotate it until it clicks into place, and to remove it, press the release point on the bracket.
