Tools You Will Need to Measure Vertical Blinds

  • A steel measuring tape
  • A pencil for marking and noting your sizes
  • A sheet to write down your results
  • A ladder if the windows are tall

Tips for Accurate Measuring

  • Never mix up height and width when writing down your sizes. Swapping them can lead to blinds that will not fit.
  • If you are measuring more than one window, do not assume they are the same size. Measure each one separately and record them. Even small differences can affect how well the blinds fit.

Outside Recess

Measure the full area that you want the blind to cover. To reduce light gaps, it is best to let the blind extend at least 70mm above the recess and 50mm on each side.

The bottom overlap depends on personal choice, but keep in mind any obstacles such as radiators.

Always use a metal tape as fabric ones may stretch or bend, giving results that are not correct.

Inside Recess

If you want your blind to sit inside the recess, measure the complete width and height of the opening. We will then make the required adjustments so the blind fits properly.

Take measurements in three places for both width and drop, and note the smallest size.

Do not make your own reductions as we will do that to ensure a precise fit.

Again, use a metal tape, since cloth ones can give inaccurate figures.

Before starting, make sure you have all the parts that come with your vertical blind.

Extra Items You Will Need:

  • 2 top fix brackets
  • 2 face fix brackets
  • 1 set of hangers
  • 1 Allen key
  • 2 stabilising chains
  • 1 safety hook
  • 4 wood screws
  • 1 weight
  • A pencil
  • Screws
  • A drill with suitable bits
  • A crosshead screwdriver
  • A steel measuring tape

Face Fix

Place the brackets about 5cm from each end of where the headrail will sit. If more brackets are provided, fit the extras evenly across the blind’s length. Check that your fixings are right for the surface or wall you are attaching them to.

To fit, hook the back of the headrail into the bracket and turn it into place. Then tighten the small screw at the front of the bracket to hold it secure.

Top Fix

First, measure and mark where the brackets will go, leaving room for any handles or obstructions that project into the recess. The brackets should be placed about 10cm from each end of the headrail position, which helps to clear the window handles. If more brackets are included, fit them evenly along the rail. Always check that your fixings suit the wall or surface you are attaching them to.

To fit, tilt and hook the headrail into the bracket until it clicks into place. To remove it, press the bracket at the marked point and release the rail.
