Tools You Will Need to Measure Vertical Blinds

  • A solid steel measuring tape
  • A pencil to mark your points and write down the measurements
  • A worksheet to record the sizes you take
  • A step ladder, if your windows are high

Helpful Tips for Accurate Measuring

Be careful not to confuse the height with the width when you are writing down your measurements, as switching them could cause the blind not to fit. If you are measuring more than one window, do not assume they are identical. Check each window separately and write down each size, as even small differences can affect the fit.

Measuring for Outside Recess

Measure the exact area you want the blind to cover. To reduce light entering around the edges, it is best for the blind to overlap the recess by at least 70mm at the top and 50mm on both sides. The amount of overlap at the bottom is your choice, but remember to allow for radiators or other obstacles. Always use a steel tape measure, as cloth ones can stretch or bend and give the wrong results.

Measuring for Inside Recess

If you would like the blind to sit inside the recess, measure the total width and height of the recess space. The correct deductions will then be made to make sure the blind fits perfectly.

Take three measurements for the width and three for the drop, then use the smallest result for each. Do not make deductions yourself, as these will be applied to ensure the right fit. A steel tape should be used, as fabric tapes may give inaccurate sizes.

When fitting your vertical blind, make sure you have the following included:

Extra Equipment You Will Need During Installation

  • 2 top fix brackets
  • 2 face fix brackets
  • 1 set of hangers
  • 1 Allen key
  • 2 stabilising chains
  • 1 safety hook
  • 4 wood screws
  • 1 weight
  • A pencil
  • Screws
  • A drill with suitable bits
  • A crosshead screwdriver
  • A steel tape measure

Face Fix

For face fixing, place the brackets about 5cm from both ends of where the headrail will go. If more than two brackets are provided, place the extra ones evenly across the full width. Always check that the fixings are suitable for the wall or surface you are attaching them to.

Hook the back of the headrail into the bracket, then rotate it into position. Secure the headrail by tightening the small screw at the front of the bracket.

Top Fix

For top fixing, measure and mark carefully, allowing space for window handles or other items that stick into the recess. Place the brackets around 10cm from the ends of the headrail position so the handles are cleared. If more than two brackets are given, space them evenly across the width. Make sure the fixings are correct for the surface.

Tilt the headrail into the bracket and rotate it until it clicks into place. To remove it, simply press the release point on the bracket.
