Tools You Will Need:

  • Steel measuring tape
  • Pencil for marking and noting measurements
  • Worksheet or paper to record results
  • Ladder if windows are high

Important Tips for Accurate Measurement:

  • Do not confuse the height with the width when writing them down, as this can result in a blind that does not fit correctly.
  • If you are measuring more than one window, do not assume they are all the same size. Measure each individually, as small variations can make a big difference to the finished fit.

Measuring for Outside the Recess

Take the exact measurement of the area you want the blind to cover. To reduce light coming through at the edges, it is recommended that the blind extends at least 70mm above the recess and 50mm at each side. The amount of overlap at the bottom is down to your personal preference, though it is important to allow for features such as radiators. Always use a steel tape measure, as cloth ones may bend or stretch and give you inaccurate readings.

Measuring for Inside the Recess

This is the method to use if you want your blind to sit neatly inside the window recess. Measure the total width and height of the recess (the full opening). Adjustments will then be made to ensure the blind fits properly. Measure across three different points for both width and height, and use the smallest figures recorded. Do not make deductions yourself, as these will be taken care of for you. Always use a steel measuring tape to ensure precise results, as fabric tapes can stretch.

When fitting your vertical blind, make sure you have the following items:

  • Top fix brackets (x2)
  • Face fix brackets (x2)
  • Hangers (x1)
  • Allen key (x1)
  • Stabilising chains (x2)
  • Safety hook (x1)
  • Wood screws (x4)
  • Bottom weight (x1)
  • Pencil
  • Screws
  • Drill with the correct drill bits
  • Crosshead screwdriver
  • Metal tape measure

Face Fix Installation

Position the brackets around 5cm from each end of the headrail. If more than two brackets are supplied, fit the extras evenly along the full length of the headrail. Make sure the fixings you use are suitable for the wall or surface you are attaching them to. Hook the back of the headrail into the bracket, rotate it into position, and secure it by tightening the small screw at the front of the bracket.

Top Fix Installation

Measure carefully and mark the fixing points, making sure you allow for any obstructions such as handles inside the recess. Place the brackets about 10cm from each end of the headrail so the blind clears the handle. If more than two brackets are included, install the extra ones evenly across the length of the blind. Confirm that the fixings are appropriate for the surface. Tilt the headrail into the bracket and rotate until it clicks securely. To remove the headrail, press the release section on the bracket.
