Tools You Will Need to Measure Vertical Blinds

  • A sturdy steel measuring tape
  • A pencil for marking and noting measurements
  • A worksheet to record your measurements
  • A ladder for high windows, if necessary

Tips for Accurate Measurements

Make sure you do not mix up the height and width measurements when recording them, as swapping these could result in a blind that does not fit correctly. If you are measuring multiple windows, do not assume they are all the same size. Measure each window individually because small differences can affect the final fit.

Measuring for Outside Recess

Measure the exact area you want the blind to cover. To reduce light from leaking around the edges, it is best for the blind to extend at least 70mm above the recess and 50mm on each side. The overlap at the bottom is optional, but consider obstacles such as radiators. Always use a metal tape measure, as cloth tapes can stretch and give inaccurate measurements.

Measuring for Inside Recess

If the blind is to fit inside the window recess, measure the full width and height of the recess (the size of the window hole). The necessary deductions will be applied to ensure a perfect fit.

Measure three times for both the width and the drop, and use the smallest measurements. Do not make any deductions yourself, as this will be done to guarantee a proper fit. A metal tape measure is recommended to avoid inaccurate readings.

Before you start, make sure you have all the items that come with your blind:

Additional Equipment You Will Need During Installation

  • 2 top fix brackets
  • 2 face fix brackets
  • 1 set of hangers
  • 1 Allen key
  • 2 stabilising chains
  • 1 safety hook
  • 4 wood screws
  • 1 weight
  • A pencil
  • Screws
  • A drill with the correct bits
  • A crosshead screwdriver
  • A metal tape measure

Face Fix

For face fixing, place the brackets approximately 5cm from each end where the headrail will sit. If more than two brackets are supplied, space any extra brackets evenly across the length of the blind. Make sure the fixings are suitable for the wall or surface.

Hook the back of the headrail into the bracket and rotate it into position. Secure the headrail by tightening the short screw on the front of the bracket.

Top Fix

For top fixing, measure and mark the space carefully, leaving room for handles or other items that stick into the recess. Place the brackets about 10cm from the ends to avoid interfering with the window handles. If there are more than two brackets, space them evenly along the length. Make sure the fixings are suitable for the surface.

Tilt the headrail into the brackets and rotate it until it clicks into place. To release the headrail, press the release point on the bracket.
